Vodacom empowers thousands of girls with digital skills through #CodeLikeAGirl

   Since 2017, the Vodacom #CodeLikeAGirl initiative has gained immense popularity, inspiring young girls to venture into the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). More than 6 300 girls have benefitted from the programme to date, which teaches coding among other technology and life skills. Critically, by the end of the current financial year, the programme will have reached in excess of 10 000 underprivileged girls. The #CodeLikeAGirl initiative contributes to building a more digital, inclusive, sustainable future on the continent while tackling low representation of women in STEM education through a structured educational programme that targets underprivileged girls. Vodacom launches hybrid coding boot camp to empower more girls in STEM

As part of this year’s #CodeLikeaGirl programme, Vodacom is launching a hybrid coding boot camp from 2-6 October 2023 for young women aged between 14 and 18 years old. The on-site training will be hosted at 19 Schools of Excellence across the country, with virtual training accessible to all female learners who meet the criteria.   Female participation is lagging in STEM fields in most countries. A report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), titled “Cracking the code: Girls’ and women’s education in STEM” indicated only 35% of STEM students in higher education globally are women. Vodacom continues to narrow the gender digital divide with their first 2023 #CodeLikeAGirl event

Vodacom has announced the first  installment of its popular #CodeLikeAGirl programme for 2023. The 4-day workshop, designed to teach young women critical ICT skills takes place from the 27 th  to the 30 th  of March 2023 targeting 600 girls to join. Sessions are held across Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and North West provinces. The #CodeLikeAGirl programme is aimed at closing the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields by inspiring more girls to explore careers that involve coding. Since its inception, Vodacom has trained over 4000 girls through this programme, helping them unlock their passion for coding. Vodacom has launched another installment of its inspiring #CodeLikeAGirl programme that will see 250 girls between the ages of 14 and 18 receive coding training from 03 -07 October 2022 in the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces. The Vodacom #CodeLikeAGirl programme is growing by leaps and bounds and is inspiring more young girls to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Vodacom plans to train 1 500 young girls in coding in this financial year, bringing the number of girls trained through this programme to 4000 since 2017. This is a testament of the growing importance of this initiative which is designed to bridge the gender digital gap in South Africa. The Vodacom #CodeLikeAGirl programme is aimed at encouraging girls to explore careers that require coding skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields and industries. Not only does it help develop coding, but the programme also teaches girls valuable life skills, under the guidance of accomplished mentors who are passionate about technology. Vodacom Media Release: #CodeLikeAGirl success shows demand for STEM learning for young girls across the African continent

The Vodacom #CodeLikeAGirl initiative is growing in popularity and is starting to inspire more young girls to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. While this year’s instalment of the #CodeLikeAGirl programme only had space for 600 young girls, the programme was oversubscribed by 40%, with more than 1,000 young girls registering to take part. To cater for this huge demand, plans are underway to run another edition before the end of this year. For the first time, the local programme attracted young girls from countries outside of South Africa.   The initiative   attracted 25 girls from six other countries including Botswana, Albania, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho and Mozambique. Launched in 2017 with the aim of closing the gender gap and inspiring young girls to pursue STEM careers, the  programme has been implemented in South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, DRC and Lesotho.
