FlySafair hold the birthday party of the decade

South Africa’s favourite low-cost airline is celebrating its 10th birthday in style with the return of its infamous annual mega sale. This year, the airline will be selling a limited number of tickets for just R10, airport tax included. In the past this almost too-good-to-be-true sale has brought the country to a near stand-still as customers across the country are glued to multiple devices, hoping to be one of the lucky ones to gain access to the website and bag themselves some cheap seats.

Much like previous years, FlySafair has scattered the marked down flights across all its domestic routes. There will be 50 000 of these individual one-way seats available for departure dates between May and the 30th of November 2024.

“This sale is always a highlight in our year,” says Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair. “But being a milestone birthday, this year feels a little extra special. Each mega sale offers an opportunity for us to share our love of flying and the joy that comes with it with those who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to fly. Seeing the social media posts and hearing the stories from our lucky winners is the greatest present we could ever hope to receive.”

Every year social media comes alive during the sale. X in particular becomes a positive space for hopefuls to share their travel dreams, sparking debates among those who can’t quite believe the sale can be real. Each year we see these dwindle as those lucky winners share their excitement and plans after grabbing their share of the loot.

One such story which filled the hearts of everyone at FlySafair was posted on X by a customer whose grandmother had sadly passed. The customer shared with FlySafair his gratitude for this special, which meant the entire family could now travel from Cape Town to Johannesburg and back to celebrate the life of their beloved family member.

Others in the waiting room turned to bribery and begging to try to increase their chances of joining the now 215 000 FlySafair customers who have bagged tickets between R1 and R9.

“Besides the heartwarming stories which show just how far this sale goes in uniting our customers with the faces and places they love, watching the conversations on X is definitely a favourite part of this sale. There is nothing quite like the South African sense of humour which really comes out during the waiting period,” says Gordon. “The popularity and impact this sale has gained has really solidified our decision to invest in our product, rather than promotion. Obviously the sale gains us a large amount of exposure, but given the choice we will always choose to put people in seats and show them what it is all about.”

TJ de Bruyn has been fortunate enough to buy tickets multiple times over the years and each sale has marked a milestone in his relationship.

“For R3, I took a girl to Cape Town and from there we drove to Sutherland so I could show her the stars,” says de Bruyn. “Following that trip, she became my girlfriend and we’ve been able to explore more of Cape Town and return to Sutherland thanks to FlySafair’s R4 and R5 sales. Last year, the R9 tickets were all sold out for Cape Town, so East London became our next destination together and it was on this trip that she said yes to being my fiancé.”

For Nonhlanhla Fortune Mdluli, FlySafair’s R1 sale saw her stepping onto a plane for the very first time.

“I got a message that FlySafair was selling R1 tickets,” says Mdluli. “I have never been on a plane before, and I always wanted to go to Cape Town. I woke up early and found myself getting four tickets. It was the best getaway I ever had.”

To add to the birthday celebrations, a 30% off sale will be running concurrently on the website and FlySafair app. Unlike the R10 sale, which is only available on the FlySafair website, the 30% sale is also available on the app, running right through to midnight. The 30% off sale will include the new regional routes the airline added to its schedule last year, giving customers the opportunity to explore Maputo, Livingstone, Victoria Falls, and Harare for less.
