FlySafair celebrates 10 years of affordable air travel for all South Africans
From humble beginnings with just two
aircraft in 2014 to becoming South Africa’s leading low-cost carrier, FlySafair
is proud to mark a decade of operational excellence, innovative growth and
commitment to making air travel more affordable and accessible to
customers.
As a subsidiary of Safair, a company with a
legacy of air logistics dating back to 1965, FlySafair’s launch was to address
a demand for reliable yet budget-friendly air travel for South Africans. Since its inaugural take-off from Cape Town to
Johannesburg on 16 October 2014, the airline has flown
over 41.6 million passengers on more than 260 000 flights, making an indelible
mark on South Africa’s travel industry. FlySafair now operates a fleet of 36
Boeing 737s and serves 14 destinations both within South Africa and international
routes, including Harare and recently Windhoek.
“When FlySafair was launched 10 years ago, we
aimed to disrupt the South African market by bringing down the cost of flying
while offering a solid service. This ambition continues today, as we open the
skies to travellers with great fares, an expanding route network and a hassle-free,
on-time travel experience,” says Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at
FlySafair.
As part of its commitment to giving more
South Africans the opportunity to fly, FlySafair offers unbundled ticketing
options and a transparent fee structure, as well as popular R1-R10 fare sales.
Its user-friendly tools, such as the FlySafair mobile app and pioneering travel
management via WhatsApp, are a testament to the airline’s focus on
providing convenience for customers. The airline was also the first to
introduce 25-minute turnaround
times at airports, enhancing its seamless point-to-point service for
passengers.
By consistently delivering operational
efficiency, safety, punctuality, and customer satisfaction, FlySafair has
earned numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Skytrax Award
for Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa and Best On-Time Low-Cost Carrier Globally
by Cirium.
“While we celebrate these achievements in
aviation and our impact on boosting local tourism and employment in South
Africa, our industry is not without its challenges. Over the past 10 years, we
have had to weather economic downturns, market fluctuations and the Covid
pandemic. Throughout it all, we have kept to our mission of uniting people with
who and what they love through accessible and affordable airline offerings,”
adds Gordon.
In bringing South Africans together,
FlySafair is an avid supporter of education, business, tourism, the arts and
sport in the country. Some of its initiatives include the Business and School
Booster programmes to enable more South Africans the opportunity to travel, and
a campaign to assist local artists by decorating aircraft cabin interiors. In
addition, the airline is proud to be the trusted domestic carrier for the
Springbok rugby team since 2017.
“Our journey over the past decade would not have been possible without our
customers, employees and partners. Together, we have accomplished incredible
feats, from industry firsts to memorable moments in the skies. Building on
Safair’s almost 60-year history, FlySafair is rooted in innovation, community
spirit and an unwavering dedication to making travel dreams a reality for all
South Africans. We look forward to another 10 years of aviation success,”
concludes Gordon.
