A Month with the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6: Compact, Fun, and Impressively Powerful

After spending  a month with the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Flip 6, I can sum up my experience in three words: compact, fun, and powerful. Previously, I wouldn’t have called the Flip series "powerful," but 2024 has brought an entirely different device, and I’m absolutely loving it. The boost in performance is largely thanks to the introduction of Samsung’s Galaxy AI, first seen with the Galaxy S24 series.

The Cover Display: Compact, but Functional

One of the standout features for me is the 3.4" Super AMOLED cover display with a 60Hz refresh rate. While it’s functional for most tasks, I can’t help but wish Samsung had bumped this up to 90Hz, or even 120Hz, considering this is a flagship device. Most of my time using the Flip 6 is spent in clamshell mode, and thanks to Galaxy Labs, I can access most of my apps directly from the cover screen. It’s super convenient, but sometimes I wonder if I’m missing out on the full experience of that larger inner display—or maybe I’ve just grown to appreciate the small form factor too much.

Galaxy AI & Software Features

The real magic, though, lies in Samsung’s Galaxy AI. I’d love to see more features from the main display, like Smart Select and Sketch, make their way to the cover screen. While Live Translate and Circle to Search are impressive, these features could be even more useful if they were optimized for the smaller display. Live Translate, for example, is incredibly handy—it instantly changes spoken words into your chosen language, making the main display your translation hub and the cover display your translator.

Now, when paired with the Galaxy Buds Pro 2, FE, or Buds Pro 3, you even get real-time audio translation. It’s a game-changer for travel or multi-language environments. That said, as a South African, I’d love to see Samsung introduce more local languages into this feature. Samsung’s done great work in making this a global tool, but the inclusion of South African languages would make it even more inclusive. Google Gemini has already adopted this, and it works very well.

Camera Capabilities

On the camera front, the Flip 6 really shines. It features the same 50MP wide lens found in the Galaxy S24+, alongside a 12MP ultra-wide and a 10MP front-facing camera. FlexCam and Auto Zoom make capturing photos and videos a breeze, whether I’m holding the phone or propping it up in clamshell mode. Samsung’s software optimizations ensure that your shots are not only stable but also high quality, even when using the hands-free options.

Main Display: Vivid and Versatile

The 6.7" Super AMOLED main display offers an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2600 nits. Content looks stunning, whether you’re watching videos or scrolling through social media. And yes, the crease is still there—but honestly, it’s something I don’t notice anymore. Think of it this way: your nose is always in your field of vision, but your brain filters it out. The crease? Exactly the same. Once you start using the Flip, it fades into the background.

Performance and Battery Life

Under the hood, the Flip 6 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (4nm), paired with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage. The device handles everything I throw at it effortlessly, from multitasking to gaming. The performance has been seamless, thanks in large part to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. According to Geekbench results, the Flip 6 holds its own against the Galaxy S24 Ultra, delivering impressive single-core and multi-core scores. It’s reassuring to know that, despite its compact size, this phone packs serious power.

Battery life is managed by two cells: a 1130mAh battery in the top half and a 2870mAh battery in the bottom half, combining for a total of 4000mAh. Depending on my usage, I find myself charging it every other day. The combination of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Galaxy AI helps ensure efficient power consumption, making the most of the battery.

Colors & Final Thoughts

And then, there are the colors. Blue, yellow, silver shadow, and mint—each offers a unique look, but I’ve really grown fond of the yellow option. It’s bold, different, and gives the phone a personality that matches its fun and playful nature. Plus, Samsung offers plenty of accessories to help you personalize your Flip 6 even further.

Lastly, the touchpad support in clamshell mode is a total game-changer for multitasking. It’s intuitive and makes navigating the phone feel more like using a mini-laptop at times.

In just over a month, the Galaxy Flip 6 has quickly become one of my favorite devices. Compact, fun, and—yes—powerful, this is a device that delivers in all the right areas.
